CNC router spindles

The spindle is the single upgrade that changes what a desktop machine can cut, and it is also the component whose specification is most often decorative.

A 2.2kW water-cooled spindle and a 2.2kW air-cooled spindle are not the same machine. Neither is a 2.2kW spindle run on a VFD nobody configured.

What we check before you pay

Cooling changes the duty cycle, not the peak

Air-cooled spindles are simpler and noisier and get hot on long cuts. Water-cooled spindles hold temperature through a long job, which is what matters when you are cutting metal for an hour rather than engraving for five minutes.

Torque at your RPM, not peak watts

Aluminium wants a spindle that still has torque at 8,000-12,000 RPM. Many cheap spindles are only making their rated power near the top of their range, which is the range you are not using.

Runout is the number nobody publishes

Runout at the collet decides surface finish and tool life. Ask for it measured at a stated distance from the nose, and treat its absence as information.

Collet system decides your tooling forever

ER11 caps out around 7mm shank; ER16 and ER20 open up real cutters. Choosing the spindle chooses the cutters you can buy for the life of the machine.

The VFD has to match and be configured

Motor poles, rated frequency, current limit and acceleration ramp all have to be set for the specific spindle. A correctly matched pair configured wrongly behaves like a faulty spindle.

Mounting diameter and weight

An 80mm spindle will not go into a 65mm mount, and a heavier spindle on an unchanged gantry costs you some of the rigidity you were buying it for.

  1. Material and cut first What you cut and how long each job runs decides cooling and torque before any model is chosen.
  2. Spindle, VFD and mount as one decision They are bought together because they only work together.
  3. Runout and power figures requested Measured where they are available, and reported as unstated where they are not.
  4. Configuration values supplied The VFD parameters for your spindle, written down, so it works on the bench rather than after a week of forum reading.
  5. Quote and approval Spindle, VFD, mount, cabling, water pump where relevant, itemised.
  6. Ship with the machine or alone Consolidated with a machine order where there is one, to avoid paying freight twice.
