Guarding and interlocks are the specification

A classroom machine without an interlocked enclosure is a workshop machine in a classroom. Whether the door stops the spindle, and whether the e-stop cuts the drive rather than just the controller, is the first question rather than a detail.

The controller has to be the one you teach

Schools teach a specific control — FANUC, Siemens, GSK, KND or a simulator of one. A machine with a bespoke controller teaches a skill that exists nowhere else, whatever else it does well.

Twenty identical units, and identical means identical

Buying a class set a year apart frequently gets you two revisions with different boards and different spare parts. If the set will grow, fix the revision in writing now.

Consumables and spares, budgeted per seat

A teaching machine gets crashed. Belts, limit switches, collets and cutters are the real annual cost, and they are the thing nobody puts in the procurement.

Documentation in the language the technician reads

A school keeps the machine for a decade and does its own maintenance. A wiring diagram and a parts list in a language the technician reads is worth more than a spec sheet.
