CNC workholding

Workholding is the cheapest real improvement available to a desktop machine and the one most often skipped. A rigid machine holding a part in a flexing fixture is a flexing machine, and no spindle upgrade fixes that.

It is also the part with the most direct safety consequence: the failure mode is a part leaving the table at speed.

What we check before you pay

A real vice beats almost any upgrade

On a machine that chatters in aluminium, a proper precision vice frequently does more for surface finish than the next machine class up, at a fraction of the price. Ask for jaw width, clamping force and parallelism, not just the size.

Fixture plate and the thread you commit to

A drilled and tapped fixture plate turns setup from improvisation into repetition. The thread pitch you choose is permanent in practice, because every clamp, stop and stud you buy afterwards has to match it.

Clamp kits: check the stud, not the count

A "58-piece clamping kit" is mostly washers. What matters is the stud thread, the T-slot width it suits, and whether the step blocks are actually hardened.

Vacuum is for sheet, not for metal

A vacuum table is excellent for holding thin sheet flat and poor at resisting the side loads of a metal cut. Buying one for aluminium work is the commonest mismatch in this category.

Double-sided tape is a real method with a real limit

It holds thin aluminium well until it does not, and the failure throws the part. It belongs on shallow engraving, not on profiling, and we will say so rather than sell you more tape.

It has to fit your table

T-slot width and spacing, table thickness and the clearance under your gantry all constrain what will actually mount. We check those against your machine before buying.

How an order runs

  1. Machine and material first Table dimensions, slot width and what you cut decide the class of workholding before any product is chosen.
  2. One thread standard, chosen deliberately Everything you buy afterwards inherits it, so it is worth a minute now.
  3. Specification in writing Jaw width, clamping force, parallelism, plate thickness and thread, hardness of the step blocks.
  4. Supplier check Factory or trader, and whether the hardness and parallelism figures are measured or asserted.
  5. Quote and approval Vice, plate, clamp set and studs, itemised, on a route that will carry the weight.
  6. Ship consolidated Dense and cheap to add to a machine consignment; expensive to send on its own.
