desktop CNC machines, tooling and upgrade parts / Buying guide
Entry-level CNC router budget
Every first-machine budget is built from the listing price, and every first machine costs more than that. Not because of hidden fees, but because a CNC machine is a system and the listing prices one component of it.
Here is the whole system, band by band.
In this guide
The bands, and what changes between them
- Entry — extrusion frame, leadscrews, a trim-router or small DC spindle. Engraves and cuts soft material. Good for learning; poor for metal.
- Middle — steel or heavy-plate frame, ballscrews, profile rail, a 1.5–2.2kW water-cooled spindle with a VFD. The first band that cuts aluminium as a normal operation.
- Upper desktop — heavier frame, closed-loop steppers or servos, sometimes an automatic tool changer. The limit moves from the machine to your workholding and your CAM.
Everything that is not the machine
- Cutters — a starter set for your materials, plus the ones you will break while learning. Budget for breakage; it is a cost of the first month, not a failure.
- Collets — the right sizes for the shanks you intend to use.
- Workholding — a vice or a fixture plate with clamps. Frequently the highest-value purchase after the machine itself.
- Extraction or enclosure — MDF dust goes everywhere and a router spindle is louder than people expect.
- A computer to run it, which on a Mach3 machine may need to be a specific old-fashioned one.
- CAM software, if the free options do not cover your work.
Freight and duty are a real line
A desktop machine is dense: a 6040-class machine crates at roughly 60–90kg, which is chargeable weight rather than volume and puts it on sea freight for most buyers. Air freight on a machine that weight is frequently a significant fraction of the machine price.
Duty depends on classification and destination and is the buyer's liability on arrival. It is worth settling the classification before the goods move rather than arguing it at the border.
Where to spend an extra hundred
On the spindle, if it is a router spindle and you want metal. On workholding, if it is anything less than a real vice. On cutters, always — they are the cheapest component and they decide most of the result.
Not on the controller, if the frame is the limit. Not on a larger table, unless you have measured a part that needs it.
Questions & answers
Common questions
- What is the cheapest machine that cuts aluminium properly?
- Properly, as a normal operation rather than an achievement, is the middle band — steel frame, ballscrews, water-cooled spindle. Below that you are managing a limitation rather than using a capability.
- Is a used machine a good idea?
- Sometimes. Screws and rails wear, spindles are consumable, and a used machine with an obsolete proprietary controller is a machine with a fixed remaining life. Check those three before the price.
- How much should I hold back for tooling?
- Plan on a meaningful fraction of the machine price for the first month if you are starting with nothing. It sounds high and it is what people actually spend.
